Bin Samstag morgen um 2.30 angekommen. Der Flug verlief problemlos. In Casablanca hatte ich 6 Stunden Aufenthalt und habe aber blöderweise mein Buch in den Rucksack gepackt, den ich als Gepäck aufgegeben habe.
Bin für meine Verhältnisse mit schwerem Gepäck unterwegs, ca. 30 kg. Aber auf der Rückreise werden es maximal 8 kg sein. Auch war ich seit Jahrzehnten nicht mehr mit so wenig Geld unterwegs. In Frankfurt dauerten die Sicherheitskontrollen wegen Ostern extrem lange und ich hatte keine Zeit mehr, den Geldautomaten aufzusuchen, auch mein reiseübliches Sudokuheftchen fehlt. In Casablanca habe ich dann mal meine Bargeldbestände gezählt und bin auf stolze 13,35 Euro gekommen. Aber Willy meinte ja, ich bräuchte kein Geld und außerdem habe ich ja eine Kreditkarte, es ist also nicht ganz so schlimm.Arriving here Saturday morning at 2.30 am. For my standards I am traveling with heavy luggage, about 30 kg. But on the way back I'll have maximum 8 kg. For decades I haven't been traveling with so little money. At Frankfurt airport the security controls lasted forever, many tourists going on vacation for Easter and I didn't have time to visit the money machine, also there was no time to buy my usual Sudoku journal. At Casablanca airport I counted my money and possess 13,35 Euro. Willy had told me that I wouldn't need any money and I also have my credit card, it is therefore not quite as bad.
Willy erwartete mich schon ungeduldig und wir sind gleich ins Hotel gefahren. Er hat für meinen Aufenthalt ein Hotelzimmer gemietet, dass ein bisschen meinen afrikanischen Standard übertrifft. Es ist neben der chinesischen Botschaft im besseren Viertel von Nuakchott. Das Zimmer ist klimatisiert und hat ein eigenes Bad. Es gibt Satellitenfernsehen mit einigen hundert arabischen Sendern und auch einen kleinen Kühlschrank chinesischer Bauart. Der Putz bröckelt zwar von der Decke, aber alles in allem ist es sauber und relativ ungezieferfrei bis auf ein paar Ameisen und Kakerlaken.
Willy awaited me with impatience and we went straight to the hotel. He had rented a room for my time staying here which is slightly better than my average African standard. It is next to the Chinese embassy. The room is air-conditioned and has an indoor-bathroom. There is satelite TV with hundreds of Arabic channels and a small fridge – made in China. The gipsum is coming down the ceiling but all in all it is clean and relatively free of insects besides a few ants and cockroaches.
Samstag abend sind wir ein bisschen durch die Stadt gelaufen. Nuakchott ist ja sehr überschaubar. Die Innenstadt kann man locker zu Fuß in einer halben Stunde durchlaufen, aber die Außenbezirke ziehen sich einige Kilometer. Es leben rund 800.000 Menschen in dieser Stadt. Vom letzten Mal habe ich mich noch einigermaßen ausgekannt, außerdem hatte ich ja vorher den Stadtplan schon eifrig bei Google Earth studiert.
Saturday evening we walked around the town. Nuakchott it not that big. You can cover downtown withing 30 minutes, but the outskirts stretch several kilometers. About 800.000 people live in this town. From last time I knew my way around a bit besides I had studied the town map on Google Earth.
Am Sonntag morgen ging Willy zur Arbeit und ich habe das Zimmer aufgeräumt und eingerichtet. Mauretanien ist ja islamische Republik, d.h. das Wochenende ist freitags und samstags. Alkohol ist verboten, aber für Ausländer gilt das nicht, er ist allerdings extrem teuer und schwer zu bekommen. In Casablanca habe ich noch ein Flasche Whisky erstanden und wurde nicht kontrolliert. Auch der mitgebrachte Schinken und die Wurst schmecken Willy vorzüglich – ich als Vegetarier.... hier gibt es natürlich kein Schweinefleisch und auch keine Wurst oder dergleichen.Der Computer, der mir in Deutschland so viele Sorgen gemacht hat, läuft hier ohne Probleme. Wir haben auch schon Filme angeschaut – auf französisch und ich habe sie ohne größere Probleme verstanden.
Sunday morning Willy went to work while I was cleaning and inhabitating the room. Mauritania is Islamic Republic which means that the weekend is Friday and Saturday. Alcohol is forbidden but not for foreigners but it is extremely expensive and hard to get. At Casablanca I had bought a bottle of Whisky and did not get controlled. Also the ham and sausage Willy likes very much – me, being Vegetarian..., of course you cannot buy here pork or sausages.
The computer which has caused so many problems in Germany is working fine over here. We have watched several movies – in French and I understood without any bigger problems.
Als Willy weg war, kam der Hotelbesitzer und bot mir seine "speziellen" Dienste an. Er hielt mich wohl für eine Prostituierte. Als ich die Verhältnisse klargestellt hatte, war es ihm superpeinlich und er entschuldigte sich vielmals und bat mich inständig, Willy nichts zu erzählen. Seitdem ist er die Höflichkeit selbst.
When Willy was away, the hotel owner arrived and offered his "special" service. He apparently mistook me for a prostitute. After I had made clear that I was not interested he felt very much ashame and excused himself a thousand times begging me not to tell Willy. Since he has been super friendly and super polite.
Tagsüber ist es brüllend heiß. 42° im Schatten, so man Schatten findet. Um 10 Uhr schalte ich die Klimaanlage an, sie ist auf 18° eingestellt und rattert ziemlich laut, im Raum sind es aber bestimmt an die 30°. Wenn man von draußen kommt, findet man es aber herrlich kühl. Ab 18.00 Uhr wird es erträglich und nach 20.00 Uhr angenehm. Es weht immer ein leichtes Lüftchen, das kommt einem aber tagsüber so vor, als würde man vor einem Fön sitzen. Ich will mir lieber nicht vorstellen, wie warm es hier im Sommer ist.
During the day it is extremely hot. 42° in the shadow, if you can find shadow. At 10 am I turn on the air condition, it is installed at 18° and very noisy, in the room we still have at least 30°. When you come in from the outside you will find it pretty cool. After 6 pm the temperature goes down a bit, at 8 pm it is nice. There is always a slightly breeze but it feels as if you would sit in front of a hair dryer. I better don't want to imagine how it will be in summer.
Da Willy auch immer am Nachmittag/Abend arbeitet, habe ich schon mehrmals alleine die Stadt erkundet und kenne mich inzwischen einigermaßen aus – in der Innenstadt. Nuakchott erinnert mich sehr an Khartoum, das Stadtbild und auch die Menschen, die hier leben. Die Kleidung sowohl der Männer als auch der Frauen ähnelt sehr der sudanesischen Kultur. Die Hauptstraßen sind asphaltiert, in den anderen Straßen könnte man wunderbar Beachvolleyball spielen. Noch nie habe ich so viele unterschiedlichen Arten von Sand gesehen, grob, fein, mit Muscheln durchsetzt, manchmal auch wie Mehl und in allen Farbschattierungen von fast weiß – alle Braun-, Gelb- Orange- und Grautöne gibt es.
Die Menschen sind alle freundlich, aber distanziert. Straßenverkäufer wollen dir alles mögliche andrehen, aber es hält sich im Rahmen.
Because Willy is also working in the afternoon/evening I strolled around the town several times on my own and know my way around – in the city center. Nuakchott reminds me very much in Khartoum, the city image and also the people who live here. The clothes of the men as well as the women is similaar to the Sudanese culture. The main roads are asphalt, the other roads would be perfect for beach volleyball. I have never before seen so many different colors and forms of sand in one place. Very rough big corns with sea shells, tiny floury and all colors from white- braun, yellow, orange and grey.The people are also very friendly at distance. Street vendors try to sell you something but are not as nagging as in other countries.
